I checked out the senior center in the city I'm currently in. I'm in my 50's and go to the library frequently. I always see same seniors there reading the newspapers. Next door is a senior center, so one day while going into the library I went to see what was going on at the senior center. When I walked in I almost felt like I was at an assisted living they had those same type of chairs you see in the lobby of an assisted living. The chairs were lined up on both sides of the hallway. People were sitting in chairs chatting with each other. I looked around there was a small gym. I walked to the back which was where the reception desk and information was. There were bookcases of free books and in the back rooms a craft room and a billard room. There was also a small cafeteria and dining room where they were preparing lunch. The lunch was for age 60+ and there was a suggested donation. When I walked in I kinda felt like people had been dumped off there. There was no one my age and the average age was 75+. At the information desk they did have all kinds of bus trips people could sign up for concerts, casino, museum, etc. There were also social services, a social worker, technology services, transportation services and the also had lists of resources for seniors. The ladies at the reception and information desk were really nice. Two of the ladies were the Director and Assistant Director and some volunteers. the hours are 8am to 3pm M-F closed weekends. You had to be 55 to join the senior center but I don't know if it would appeal to someone at 55 or even someone in their 60's. I know loneliness affects people of all ages. Maybe it's being around people who've retired and in declining health. Also similar mobility. I'm not sure if my generation or later generations would want to go to a senior center. We are still too wrapped up in online and social media. Would senior centers die out because we don't go? My grandparents and parents never went to a senior center.
